The Breax are something of a black sheep. In a game that's been as recently stagnant as it is unimaginative, this trio that includes an Armenian Refugee and two Baltimore natives has carved a way for itself and other would-be Christian artists in the small sub-circle of Hip Hop. By no means does this statement claim that there are only a few people reppin' God in Rhyme on the mic, just that there are a small group of them with the “talent” to do so successfully. The team, consisting of emcees Ruslan and Beleaf as well as drummer Mic B have proven time and again that they are especially capable. On their latest effort “Restocked” they continue the trend of blending party music with praise lyrics in a mix that all too often is synonymous with genius.
One of the things that stand out right from the gate is that The Breax have found a way (where others have failed miserably) to take the core points of Faith and God and masterfully present them in new and varying tracks throughout the album. Joints like “For What” seem equally at home at house parties as they do at late night prayer meetings, an accomplishment that only a short list of emcees can boast.
The blend of old school style dance beats infused with jazz give the group a sound unique enough to stand toe-to-toe with some of my favorite consecutive artists and their passion for storytelling is obvious as it stands out as something more than just filler to an impressive beat library. Tracks like the Sojourn produced “The Greatest” prove the team has a firm grasp of the history of the genre they are working so hard to redefine. Its also important to keep in mind that these three aren't just attempting to create good music but instead are working toward a goal to use Hip Hop as a medium to promote their Christian faith.
3 out of 5 (GREAT - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
