Where Hip Hop is Our Hustle

So whats up with all the ridiculousness goin' on with our music and its artists right now? Most of you probably have already heard but Ice T is going at Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne pissed off the entire Mixtape DJ nation and Game got Young Bucks back against 50. Anybody got an opinion on all this?

Let us know what you think!

1) In-so-far as Soulja Boy is dumb, Ice-T is right. 'Hoooo Superman' does suck shit and it is an affront to actual rappers who are working hard to speak creatively and honestly on complex issues. That being said, anyone who has been around as long as Ice-T should be able to instantly recognize a cornball fad and what will happen. Superman is as laughable as anything Vanilla Ice ever did. It will only be a matter of time until Soulja Boy is a walking punchline.

Also, Soulja Boy needs to show some fucking respect to his elders. Ice-T isn't the best rapper from his generation, but he was part of an incredible piece of hip-hop history. I don't think Soulja Boy is aware of how many potential friends in the industry he has alienated by being a cocky punk.

2) Mixtapes are a complex issue, but logic leans towards Lil Wayne on this one. They are a clear copyright violation. The best mix tapes I've heard combine the hits with the underground shit that you can't find anywhere else. Those rarities are a terrible temptation. I want them passionately with my heart. However, people who download mix-tapes without purchasing the official releases of the hits contained on the mix-tape are stealing. This is disrespectful to the artist.

Conclusion: If the mix-tape is comprised entirely of commercially unavailable material (or the material sucks dick and you have no respect for the supposed 'artist', a la Soulja Boy), download and enjoy. However, if you respect the artist and the material is available commercially, don't download the mix-tape.

3) Who cares about 50? His last record was boring.

I hear ya on the Ice-T/Soulja Boy thing. I defiantly feel that the music lacks content and depth. Something a lot of us are looking for. Yet, at the same time most people are looking for music to make them dance. There are the rare few that can slide in some consciousness in between the beats but its not so much a requirement as it is a hope. Besides, even T himself has admitted to having a few blemishes on his own record. I remember quite a few movie tie-in songs that were far from deep. So I guess the sword is double edged on that one.

As for the mix tape thing. I think Wayne was in the wrong. The mixtape DJ really made Weezy what he is right now. Besides that fact I still think someone is in a basement cranking out "Lollypop" tracks for him, the same DJs that he's hatin' on really showed him love. Like a wise man once said, "Cocaine's a powerful drug."

One think to keep in mind too is that record labels and industry execs give/purposly leak tracks to the DJs to help boost the artists credibility and keep their names in the streets. Weezy was notorious for this. He used these cats to help keep people salivating for the Carter III.

I just don't think its right that now that the Album is out and he's getting some exposure for it that you just blow off the people that help you get there. Most would say, "that's showbiz" but it still doesn't make it right.

Actually, the funniest part of SB's one-hit-wonder is the fact that he does the robot dance (Robo Cop?) after splooging on a girl's back and giving her a cape. That's great. But yeah, nobody can take that seriously.

Here's a link to one of Ice T's comments on audio for those out of the loop.

Well I think all mainstream rap today is hot garbage. Now Soulja Boy and the rest of these clowns are merely opportunists, if there was no money involved in rap they would not be rappers (probably bee catchers if that was the next booming business). Soulja Boy made a song about a dance (at least that's what I make of it) and it's cool for the fools supporting it. Ice T and the likes of other rap veterans should have set up a rap creed long ago that states "IF YOU'RE LYRICS ARE NOT UP TO PAR WITH RAP ETHICS AND IDEATION OF RAP THEN YOU GET BLACK BALLED FROM THE GAME", or simply get your ass kicked in for insulting the genre of music.

Imagine creating an intellectual work very dear and personal to you and pioneering this style of art and then comes along "WRINGLEY BROTHERS CIRCUS" and they make a mockery of your concept and it gets played as clown art.
You'd be perturbed also?

As far as that other bull%@#! Lil Wayne pissing off the DJ's, well I believe most
DJ's need to be pissed on and slapped in the face with a BRICK for pumping this whack a%! music to the public and I don't give a damn about what the major companies are sending to the radio stations either. I happen to know for a fact that the ultimate power in exploiting music is in the hands of the program directors of these radio stations (a personal friend of mine owned a radio station here locally in San Diego for a couple of decades by the name of Willie Morrow, the creator of the California Curl) and he ultimately controlled what was disclosed to the public.

Now all these tough guys in the music game need to stop the nonsense of pretending to be tough guys. Where I come from you are either a tough mutha' and your reputation precedes you or you calm your Poodle a#! down. I say take it to the ring with the real gladiators, join a clandestine team in the military or shut the F%@! UP!

Haha. So many great opinions, so many different angels to this one. Let me lay this on you guys mind for a sec tho. When it comes to cats like Soulja Boy and the like, I too am not really feeling that. Yet, I can't really knock him because you gotta understand how this kid came up. Whether he sees it as a job or just a passion he dropped tracks on YouTube and the "people" aka fans made it popular enough for this kid to be where he is. So to say he's garbage and useless is saying the same for the fans who love it.

Some of us wouldn't think twice to do that but still if people are entertained by it, who are we to judge. Its that same thing we told our parents when our brand of music was coming up and they couldn't get next to it.

And I get what Geno's saying about program directors having the power but really I feel (notice I said feel not know) that any program director worth his weight in salt is not going to pass up playing a legitimately popular song from the club on their station. Get enough requests for a song at any station around the US and it'll play or risk loosing listeners.

Ultimately I feel (there's that word again) it falls on those DJs mixtape or otherwise who give the fans that song to request. Either in the club or other media. Last point to is that while I don't know about San Diego, where I'm from in Jersey a lot of program directors are DJs, just look at XM Radios Leo G who runs 66RAW and The Rhyme.
Like I said not disagreeing. Just throwing my hat in the discussion.

Well NJ, let me throw my dollar in the hat. Soulja boy is EXTREME H.O.T. Garbage!! However, “Is he doing his thing?” YES. He's an entertainer. He entertains people. UFC members and avid fans said Kimbo wasn't a fighter, but he also got his fame from you tube. Now what I feel the difference is, is the LYRCS. To me Soulja boy is baby bottles and nursey rhymes. Mother Goose or the Cat in the Hat could have been his Nany. On the other hand, I need not comment on ICE T. I will admit the beat is catchy and sometimes fun to dance to. Like I said entertaining…………

I like what you're saying, Geno. By the same logic, Stone Temple Pilots should be beating the shit out of My Chemical Romance right about now.

Yeah. Lil Wayne is pullin' his balls out coz he has a new album. Otherwise he wouldn't be in the new at all.

The Game and 50 are just trying to stay relevant, because honestly there's better artists out there, and I guess Young Buck just wants someone to know who he is (I don't).

Soulja Boy vs. Ice T is like Coldplay going up against The Rolling Stones. Bitch just can't even front like he even compares to T. Honestly T seems to just be having fun with it since Soulja Boy obviously isn't even in the same league. I mean, have to seen SB with his crew trying to talk shit about Ice T? They are, exactly, a bunch of little kids being internet tough guys. Fuckin' Del Tha Funkee Homosapien could kick their bitch asses.

Was that a jab at Del?

He raps about things like ESPers and Space Doo-Doo Pistols. I think that gives him some sort of diplomatic immunity.

You're talking about his Deltron persona. Del as Deltron is amazing. The rest of his stuff is not so great, but I love him anyway.

Xippy, forgot to mention this last week, but I thought of another album you might like if you liked Deltron 3030.

Del also performs with Automator and others on another concept album called "Handsome Boy Modelling School". It's brilliant.
